Lot 4658
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 21 mm, 3.21 g, 11 h), Rome, 316. IMP CONSTANTINVS [P F AVG] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. [SOLI IN]-VI-CT COM D N / [(star) - (crescent) / R ...] Sol, nude but for chlamys, standing front, head to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding Victory on globe in his left. RIC 49. A curious flip-over double strike. Area of weakness on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

Coins with obverses on both sides are very rare. This example was first struck normally on both sides. It was then flipped over and lay unnoticed on the anvil die as a second flan was put on top of it and struck, producing a second obverse on the reverse and a flattened area on the first obverse.
